This workshop (formerly known as Designing Workshops for Significant Learning”), authored by me and delivered completely online by Optimize Learning, Inc., is designed to help faculty and others learn and apply my model of course design as discussed in my book, “Creating Significant Learning Experiences, An Integrated Approach to Designing College Workshops (Links to an external site.),” to design their own, high quality courses.
It is appropriate for anyone designing a course to be delivered face-to-face in a ground classroom, totally online or in a blended (f2f and online) classroom as it focuses on designing courses, beginning at the course level, that can result in more significant student learning using the principles of “Integrated Course Design”– which apply to the design of all courses regardless of method of delivery.
In the workshop, through a variety of activities you will not only view/read lessons, but also apply the principles and lesson material to a course of your own, discuss your work with colleagues in the workshop and receive feedback throughout from both an experienced workshop coach and your colleagues. You should select a course to work on that is a real course and apply each of the principles to the same course throughout the two-week period. This workshop will help you get started. At the time the workshop concludes, although within a short two-week period you will not have had the opportunity to design an entire course, you will have had significant practice applying the principles to your own courses.
Although you may, in “Significant Learning by Design-I,” work ahead in the workshop, it is not designed as a self-paced learning experience. It is a facilitated workshop designed so that everyone not only receives frequent, personal feedback from a workshop coach, but an exchange of feedback and shared ideas through active participation with colleagues in the discussion forums. It’s fast-paced so you will need to stick close to the suggested schedule for completing activities.
The workshop is organized in modules and begins with a module labeled “Start Here.” The remaining seven modules are labeled as “Steps.” You must start with the Start Here module and once you’ve completed that, you will be able to proceed to Step 1 and complete each subsequent step and the activities within each step in sequential order.
Key elements and documents in the workshop include all of the information in the Start Here module, Course Syllabus, Suggested Schedule of Activities, and Step Guides, Lessons, and Knowledge Check, Application, Discussion, Reflection Activities in each Step and a short Portfolio Activity at the end. Announcements are posted daily by the workshop coach to assist and guide you throughout the workshop. You will work closely with your workshop coach and are encouraged to interact frequently with both your coach and colleagues and revise and refine your work based on their feedback throughout the workshop.
The workshop is designed to model Integrated Course Design and best facilitated learning practices– and different from many other self-paced course design resources available to faculty, is not only facilitated and includes applied learning activities with personal feedback, but employs common resources available to most faculty designing their own courses, including an LMS, and SoftChalk, Microsoft Word and PDF software.
Again, we’re glad you’ve decided to join us and trust you will enjoy the experience!
